“Dhaara….. Dhaara Pandit…. and you?” This is how they got introduced to each other more than thirty years ago. The eyes… yes the eyes were what caught his attention when Dhaara introduced herself. And then she smiled…. and he was like… No! It’s definitely the smile… how can some human being have that angelic a smile? He instantly fell for her…. S.R. Bose the idealist, the man or precisely the young man who wanted to change the society with his leftist views fell head over heels in love with that smile!
The occasion: a Youth Festival held in the University and both of them were representing their respective departments in Elocution. S.R.Bose…. called as Satya by his peers was simply invincible when it came to anything related to power of speech: debates, extempore, elocutions. It was always a fight for the second spot because people said… the first was always reserved for Satya. But that was before Dhaara had flashed her smile in front of him!! After that… everything went haywire.
“What should be a woman’s priority in life: Work or Home?” was the topic of the elocution. Dhaara was the first participant and Satya just lost track of time after that. He simply remembered Dhaara climbing up those four stairs to the stage… standing on the dais and speaking her heart out: “Women, Men or Children; the priority of anybody’s life should be listening to their hearts. Why do we always make the women choose x OR y… a OR b? Why does it have to be the woman who has to fight the dilemma of OR? Why can’t they simply do what they want to do to their heart’s content without being judged?
Why can’t they just go out, work, feel successful, say no to cooking and having children and still get respect without being called “that ultra modern ambitious bitch”? Why can’t they just choose to stay home, nurture their kids and family with their own wish and not branded by some as “that dumb domestic female”? Why is it necessary that they have to fall in some category prefixed by others? Or why they should be categorised at all? Stop giving them the options of this OR that… stop making them choose between what their heart wants and what you want them to want. The day you start respecting a woman for her choices and her conditions of living life…. that is the day when you have really started respecting them. So stop judging anybody especially women if you want an optimistic and progressive air around you. Let humans follow their heart in tandem with their brains. This is what God intended them to do!”
When she descended from the stage amidst an uproar of applause, Satya’s heart skipped a beat just by looking at that radiant face. He was dazed throughout the remaining competition and Satya-the invincible was so lost in Dhaara and her speech that for the very first time he knew, he didn’t give his hundred percent to his speech. He knew he had lost that first spot to Dhaara and he knew something else was also lost along with that first spot.
After that competition it was a furore. After all, someone had defeated “The Invincible”. When results were announced, Dhaara stood on the stage holding the winner’s trophy and Satya for the very first time literally beamed standing on her left, holding the runners up trophy.
